On December 7, 2024, the Australian Government introduced the Skills in Demand (SID) visa, replacing the previous Temporary Skills Shortage (TSS) visa. This change is part of a broader migration strategy aimed at addressing critical skill shortages and modernizing Australia’s migration framework

Key Features of the Skills in Demand (SID) Visa (Subclass 482)

  1. New Streams:
  • Core Skills Stream: For applicants earning more than $73,150 in an occupation listed on the newly implemented Core Skills Occupation List (CSOL).
  • Specialist Skills Stream: For applicants in any ANZSCO occupation earning $135,000 or more, excluding occupations in ANZSCO major groups 3, 7, and 8.
  • Labour Agreement Stream: Continues existing settings from the TSS visa while further development of the proposed Essential Skills Stream takes place.
  1. Core Skills Occupation List (CSOL):
  • Consolidates previous occupation lists into a single list covering 456 occupations, providing greater opportunities for both employers and skilled migrants.
  • Applies to both the Core Skills Stream of the SID visa and the Direct Entry stream of the subclass 186 Employer Nomination Scheme visa.

To apply for the Skills in Demand (SID) Visa (subclass 482) – Core Skills Stream, follow these steps:

  1. Check Eligibility:
  • Occupation: Ensure your occupation is listed on the Core Skills Occupation List (CSOL).
  • Work Experience: You must have at least 1 year of relevant work experience in your nominated occupation within the last 5 years.
  • Skills Assessment: Obtain a suitable skills assessment if required for your occupation.
  • English Proficiency: Meet the English language requirements specified for your occupation.
  1. Find a Sponsor:
  • Secure a position with an Australian employer who is willing to sponsor you for this visa.
  • The employer must be an approved Standard Business sponsor and must nominate you for a position that fits your skills and experience.
  1. Employer Nomination:
  • Your employer submits a nomination application to the Department of Home Affairs, detailing the position and your suitability.
  1. Gather Required Documents:
  • Identification: Valid passport and personal identification documents.
  • Skills Assessment: Proof of a positive skills assessment, if applicable.
  • English Language Test Results: Valid test scores demonstrating required proficiency.
  • Work Experience: References or employment records confirming your relevant experience.
  • Health and Character: Medical examination results and police clearance certificates.
